Cancer Care - What Is Oncology?
Oncology literally means the study of Cancer. A cancer specialist is thus called an Oncologist. So for "Oncology", read "Cancer Care"!
In our department, 'Oncology' refers to the treatment of patients who have "solid" cancers, as opposed to "blood" cancers which come under the term 'Haematology' (though there is some over-lap).
The commonest examples of cancer treated by the oncologists are those affecting the breast, bowel, prostate, ovary and lung.
