BREAST
AZURE
For female patients with Stage II / III primary breast cancer, who will be receiving chemotherapy and/or endocrine therapy. Asks does adding Zoledronic Acid to chemotherapy or hormone therapy reduce recurrence rates?
This trial has now closed to patient recruitment but patients continue follow up.
POSH
Genetic Study for comparing the outcomes of those with familial breast cancer with those with sporadic disease. Data will be collected about diagnosis and treatment, conventional epidemiological risk factors and family history. A systematic pathology review of all cases will be carried out prospectively and a blood test will be taken.
PRIME
This trial is for the over 65s and looks at whether older people with low risk breast cancer having breast conserving surgery are benefiting from Radiotherapy. They will be randomised to have radiotherapy or not.
Taxol
This looks at whether replacing the usual 3-weekly cycle of Paclitaxel treatment with a weekly cycle using the same total dose is more or less acceptable and/or more or less effective in patients with locally advanced breast cancer.
This trial has now closed to patient recruitment.
TEAM
Amended and reopened. Tamoxifen and Exemestane Adjuvant Multicentre Trial. ( An open label, randomised, multicentre, comparitive trial of 5 years of adjuvant exemestane vs adjuvant tamoxifen followed by exemestane in post menopausal women with early breast cancer.
This trial has now closed to patient recruitment but patients continue follow up.
REACT
A phase III multicentre double blind randomised trial of celecoxib versus placebo in primary breast cancer. It will be lead locally by Dr Chris Alcock. This trial will open here shortly.
SUPREMO
A Medical Research Council phase III, randomised trial to assess the role of adjuvant chest wall irradiation in intermediate risk, operable breast cancer following mastectomy. This trial will be lead locally by Dr Bernadette Lavery. This trial will open here shortly.
GI
VICTOR
This was a trial of the anti-inflammatory medication VIOXX, in patients whose colorectal cancer was resected, for either 2 or 5 years to see if it reduced recurrence rates. However VIOXX was withdrawn by the manufacturer because of reports of a possible increased rate cardiovascular events (ie heart attack or stroke) in persons taking the medication for over 18 months. Trial closed 1st October 2004 but still following patients up.
NSCCG
Involves taking a family history and a blood test in those who had surgery for colorectal cancer (and also partners if possible) for a Genetic Study.
ESPAC QoL
Trying to find which are the most useful questions to put in a Quality of Life questionnaire specifically for people with pancreatic cancer. Trial closed, no patients recruited.
GEMCAP
Gemcitabine has been used as standard in the US and Europe as treatment for advanced Pancreatic Cancer, while 5 Fluoro-uracil has been used here in the UK. Gemcitabine seems to have better results but would giving a combination of both be better still? Capecitabine is a new preparation which is converted to 5FU in tumour cells. This trial will compare Gemcitabine alone with Gemcitabine + Capecitabine in advanced Pancreatic Cancer. Trial closed, no patients recruited.
GEMCAP has now closed. No patients recruited.
QUASAR 2
We have been chosen as one of 25 centres around the country to take part in this trial ( mainly due to efforts on our side with VICTOR). It is in the set up stage at the moment. Comparing new monoclonal antibody avastin, with standard capecitabine for high risk colorectal cancer. This trial had originally been planned as a three arm trial:
A - capecitabine only
B - capecitabine plus avastin.
Following two negative studies presented at ASCO, the irinotecan has now been dropped from the study altogether leaving it to be a two arm study now.
A - capecitabine only
B - capecitabine plus avastin.
SOCS (Stomach and Oesophageal Cancer Study).
This is a genetic study (blood sample donation and a family history questionnaire) to find causes for Gastric(stomach) and oesophageal cancer. This study will compare and study genes from patients with cancer and also from the general population. This study is now open.
PICCOLO
A randomised clinical trial of treatment for flouracil resistant, advanced colorectal cancer, comparing standard single agent irinotecan versus irinotecan with panitumumab versus irinotecan plus ciclosporin. This trial will open here shortly.
LUNG STUDIES
Study 12 A
Double blind study looking at whether adding thalidomide to the standard treatment in Small-Cell Lung Cancer (Carboplatin/etoposide) adds any benefit.
Now closed but patients continue follow up.
Study 14 A
Double blind study looking at whether adding thalidomide to the standard treatment in Non-Small-Cell Lung Ca (Gemcitabine/carboplatin ) adds any benefit. Trial closed but still following patients up.
Now closed but patients continue follow up.
MSO1
For Mesothelioma Pts: a comparison of active symptom control (ASC) only (the standard recommended treatment) versus ASC+ some drug combinations (MVP or Vinorelbine) in newly diagnosed malignant pleural mesothelioma. Voluntarily decided to stop participating due to the advent of pemetrexed
TOPICAL
Now open to patient recruitment. ( A randomised, placebo controlled trial of tarceva (erlotinib) in patients with advanced non small cell lung cancer unsuitable for chemotherapy). Patients are randomised to tarceva or placebo.
BTOG 2
A phase III trial of gemcitabine plus cisplatin at 80 mg/metre sq versus gemcitabine plus cisplatin at 50 mg/metre sq versus gemcitabine plus carboplatin AUC 6 in stage IIIB/IV Non small cell lung cancer. It will be lead locally by Dr Nick Bates. This trial is now open to patient recruitment.
FRAGMATIC
A randomised phase III clinical trial investigating the effect of Fragmin added to standard chemotherapy in patients with lung cancer. This study does involve some patients or their carer administering a small injection on a daily basis for 24 weeks. It will be lead locally by Dr Nick Bates. This trial is now open to patient recruitment.
LUNGSTAR
A multicentre phase III randomised, double blinded, placebo controlled trial of pravastatin added to first line standard chemotherapy in patients with small cell lung cancer. It will be lead locally by Dr Nick Bates. This trial will open here shortly.
GYNAECOLOGY
OVO7
A randomised phase III study of erlotinib (tarceva) following first line platinum based chemotherapy in high risk stage I, stage II - IV ovarian, peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer. In this study, half of the patients will receive the active drug tarceva and the other half will be on observation. It will be lead locally by Dr Sally Trent. This trial is now open to patient recruitment.
NSECG
The National Study Of Endometrial Cancer Genetics. This study involves a blood sample donation and the filling of a family history questionnaire. This trial will be lead locally by Dr Sally Trent. This trial will open here shortly.
ASTEC
Randomisation for whether or not to have External Beam Radiotherapy in endometrial Cancer (in addition to Brachtherapy). Patients are currently given radiotherapy but there has been no trial to see if it adds any benefit to surgery in patients with this disease. Trial closed, no patients recruited.
CHORUS
Looks at whether giving some chemotherapy before surgery improves the outcome in patients with advanced pelvic tumours (originating in ovary, fallopian tube or pelvis ) Surgery has usually been given first, but chemotherapy might shrink the tumour making surgery easier to perform.
UKFOCCs
Looks at whether making the diagnosis earlier by doing regular screening tests (Ultrasound and Blood markers) in persons with known familial predisposition to Ovarian Cancer will improve long term survival, and whether it is feasible to have a nationwide screening program in this disease.
GENITOURINARY
Familial Prostate Cancer Study A Genetic Study of Prostate cancer in younger men or where there are several cases in the family.
BOXIT
A randomised phase III placebo controlled trial evaluating the addition of celecoxib to standard treatment of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. It will be lead locally by Mr Jonathan Greenland. This trial will open here shortly.
