The Progresses of William Hogarth
An entertaining evening was held at the University of Buckingham on 28th January in aid of the Cancer Care & Haematology Fund. The sum of £3000 was raised.
Three progresses of William Hogarth were on display, A Harlots Progress, The Rakes Progress and Marriage a la Mode from the collection of Nicholas Radclyffe who gave an amusing talk highlighting the narrative structure of the progresses and the topical allusions within each of the prints.
Owing to the great generosity of Mr & Mrs Philip Menday who provided all the refreshments, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Buckingham, Dr Terence Kealey who allowed the Fund to use the Examination Suite at the University and Nicholas Radclyffes generous gift of a Hogarth print for the raffle, all the funds raised were given to the Appeal for the extension of the Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and support for that Unit.

Press Release from London Wasps
4th July 2006
London Wasps players inspired after presenting a club donation to Stoke Mandeville Hospital’s Cancer Care Unit.
London Wasps players took time out from their pre-season schedule yesterday to visit Stoke Mandeville Hospital's Cancer Care and Haematology Unit. They met patients and staff and also members of the Friends of Stoke Mandeville Hospital, whose Cancer Unit Extension (CUE) appeal has been the focus of Wasps’ fund raising efforts over the past season.

Jonny Barrett, Neil Baxter and Richard Birkett spent the afternoon with patients, their families and staff at the ‘Wooden Spoon’ Cancer Care Unit before presenting Friends' Deputy Chairman, Roy Collis, with a cheque for £3,000, raised by the club and supporters throughout 2005-6.
The money will be donated to the Cancer Care & Haematology Fund which, having already raised £2.4 million to build the existing facility, needs to raise a further £650,000 to extend the valuable day care unit. The busy unit is already a flagship for cancer care. It allows patients to receive care in modern facilities that are designed to allow patients to receive treatment on a day care basis. This is a godsend to many patients and their families, who can thus avoid the disruption of lengthier spells in hospital. They can receive the treatment they need in an environment designed to accommodate patients and their families in comfortable surroundings.
All three Wasps’ players were impressed and inspired by the facilities they saw and the people they met.
"Meeting the patients, both young and old alike, was really inspirational," said hooker Jonny Barrett. "The bravery that they show every day is an example to use all. "
"We spoke at length to many of the patients and realised what a difference the Unit and staff working within it make to the quality of their lives. Being able to pop in for treatment rather than having to be admitted to hospital for three or four days at a time has been life changing for them. Our credit and respect must also go to the selfless nurses and volunteers working with them."
Young winger Neil Baxter agreed: "It was a great experience, visiting young children who were really strong in spirit," he said. " Even though they were dealing with serious conditions, like Leukaemia, the children were so positive - there is a lot for us to learn from that."
"The facilities that the Unit has are fantastic, but that’s only because June Wilson and many of the staff have put in so much effort and hard work in raising funds so far to build what they’ve got. I’m very proud and pleased that we’ve been able to offer them a small amount of help through the donation that we brought with us today."
In accepting Wasps’ donation, Friends Deputy Chairman Roy Collis thanked the Wasps for their generous support and added "It has been a pleasure working with the Wasps for the past year and it is most fitting that they could visit the Unit today to bring the CUE appeal, which has raised more than £25,000, to a close."
